Poker has had an incredible success the last years, and thanks to the many online casinos and poker rooms the success has had an even higher impact than otherwise could have been imagined. The poker fever not only affects the male population, but poker is also turning into one of the most popular card games among female players. What once was an exclusive male territory in dodgy backrooms has now become one of the favorite pastimes of women. And the fun has only just begun. Women seem to be increasingly attracted to the game, and skip other popular games, such as bingo to take up the challenge of poker game. The casinos already smelled the wind of change, and are now providing their customers with both tutorials for newbies, hen night and birthday packages. All of which are soaring in popularity.

Do women manage well in this new found game? It seems that women for once can take advantage of men’s inherent discrimination and belittling of their skills. Some female poker players claim that it is not a problem to play against men, and they do not feel intimidated by male superiority. They state that men tend to miscalculate the abilities of women, and perceive them as very emotional and therefore unable to bluff. Furthermore men believe that women do not have the guts to go all the way, and raise it all. This underestimation of women by men when playing poker provides the women with a possibility to compete fairly against a man and come out on top. In spite of this, there are quite a few only women’s poker tournaments taking place and ladies poker nights.

It is a fact that women do well at the poker tables. There are quite a few female poker players who are in the top poker league, such as Jennifer Harman, Annie Duke, Barbara Entright and Isabelle Mercer. They have all done very well in the World Series of Poker or European Poker Tour. Both Barbara Entright and Jennifer Harman are winners of the much desired WSOP bracelet. No to mention the shooting star, Anette Obrestrand, the 19 year old Norwegian who made her debut at the international poker tables last year, by taking home notorious prizes. But even on a less grand scale women are doing really well. A 2005 poll showed that 40 % of online poker players were women. The fact that poker moved out of the backroom and into the virtual space where its accessibility is much more comfortable, has boosted the popularity among women. Poker has become house trained and now it seem as there is no stopping the women from conquering this exciting card game.

As casino internet games increase in popularity, one game in particular is rising above the rest, poker. Poker is fast becoming the most popular of all casino internet games, and it’s popularity is only increasing with the ever growing variety of poker games out there today. Just by checking out the business pages on the internet each day, you will find reports of an online poker company getting ever more popular.

All a person needs to do is type in the world ‘poker’ at any online search engine, and millions of sited immediately come up. The best part about internet poker is that many of these online poker rooms are far from average, and contain all kinds of bonuses and gimmicks to draw you in.

In the past few years the old cigar smoking, dark back room poker image has faded, and in its place a brand new, young and star studded poker has sprung forth. This new image is helping to bring in new customers, from all age groups (well legal age groups that it) and walks of life.

For the first time ever, this summer, a strip poker game will be aired on mainstream TV, that is bound to bring in an audience. It’s not just the stripping that will draw in customers, the event was held in Arctic Finland, where players stripped in minus 20 degrees Celsius.

Similar to the strip poker game, a ‘freeze out’ tournament was held in the Arctic Circle, in which knocked out players could buy their way back into the game by removing articles of clothing. The winner of this event, Robert Varkonyi, used his parka to buy his return entry, and won the game in a t-shirt while other players jogged around the table to keep warm.

A different type of poker tournament took place in the United States recently. In this no money down tournament college students won entry into the tournament through an online poker tournament. After that students got together to play a tournament in which they bet no actual money, and all winnings went to help pay the students tuition.

Whether it’s losing your clothes in an arctic environment, or paying your way through university, the many new wild poker games are just one sign that poker is pushing its way into the lime light.

It’s not just men either, and women aren’t asked to participate because it’s strip poker but because women make up nearly 40% of all online casino poker players. While it will be doubtful that the event will focus on strip poker, we may wind up with an all-womens, skydiving poker tournament in the Sahara desert. These days, it wouldn’t be so out of the ordinary.
